This military folk art trunk was purchased in the Pittsburgh, PA area and references the Field Artillery division of the military.
It has colorful and dramatic images on allfive sides. The sides are painted with a striped shield in blue and white, with a red top.Crossing the shield are two cannons in black. Finally, in red are four cannon balls, onein each corner. The corners of the trunk are reinforced in tin, and the box itself may have been made by hand from available materials (see photo oflabel).
The top of the box reads:
BATTERY E
No 323 LFA
I am not a military expert, but from my research it is likelythe trunk is from WWI, though the style and workmanship seem earlier (if anyone hasadditional information please let me know).
I find therich colors leap out to make it the focal piece of a room. Whomever painted the trunk had real talent andpatience for it is done very well.
This would make an excellent coffee table. All that it needs is a glass top to protect the finish.
A choiceitem for the collector of folk art, militaria, or appreciator of the graphic arts.
The trunk is in generally good condition with some wearing to the paint especially on the top and one endcap.
The dimensions are: 27Lx17Hx14W
