The Doolittle Raid of April 18, 1942 was the first U.S. air raid to strike the Japanese home islands during WWII. The mission is notable in that it was the only operation in which U.S. Army Air Forces bombers were launched from the pitching deck of the USS Hornet aircraft carrier into combat. The raid demonstrated how vulnerable the Japanese home islands were to air attack just 4 months after their surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. It was a one way mission and one of the most daring bombing missions of WWII.
The first B-25B Mitchell bomber launched from the USS Hornet was piloted by mission leader Lt. Col. James H. \"Jimmy\" Doolittle. Sitting in the right seat of the aircraft was (then) co-pilot2nd Lieutenant Richard Cole. The fact that this daring mission was voluntary by those involved is one of the reasons why our US military members from that era will always be known as \"The Greatest Generation\".
Presented is a ONE OF A KIND 1/48 scale B-25B airplane display model personally signed by co-pilot Richard Cole.What makes this historic B-25B replica unique is that it is the FIRST B-25 model signed by Richard. It has three of Richard\'s signatures on the right wing panel. The reason for the three signatures was to determine which type of silver magic marker would be the best for Richard to write with while holding the B-25 in hand. After a marker type was selected by Richard subsequent B-25 models were signed with ease. Please note the photo of the left side fuselage. There is a partial palm print of silver marker ink that was transferred onto the model. After this model was signed it was repacked and placed into storage and not displayed.
What makes this RARE B-25 unique and separate from the rest?There are several \"signed\" or \"autographed models on which have a signature plate attached to the base. Those type of plates were sent to Richard which he signed and then returned the plates. Those B-25 models were never actually held in hand while being signed by Richard.
In order for this B-25 to be autographed on the wing, Richard had to hold it while signing it. This is what distinguishes OUR B-25 from the rest and makes it worth far more than the others.
It is now time to make this historic model available so that theserviceandsacrifice of the Doolittle Raiders will never be forgotten.
