For sale is an original Perry Sportswear, Inc. A-2 leatherflight jacket, 42-16175-P contract, which was worn by Army Air Forces personnelduring World War II.
The jacket has an original Conmar zipper. The knits have some wear and could use someservicing. The lining is in great condition. Overall, the jacket is in excellent conditionfor its age. Undoubtedly, the most beautifulpart of the jacket is the chest: on theright side is a beautiful painting for the 643rd Bomb Squadron and onthe left side is an equally amazing painting of an A-20 Havoc in the clouds, above56 painted bombs.
The jacket also features a leather name tag for “L.W.Smith.” Captain Larry W. Smith servedwith the 643rd Bomb Squadron, 409th Bomb Group, 9thAir Force, flying combat missions over Europe. For his actions, Captain Smith received anAir Medal, at least eight Oak Leaf Clusters, and a Distinguished FlyingCross. Notably, Captain Smith was thefirst to complete his tour of duty in the entire 409th Bomb Group bycompleting 65 missions. On his 65thmission, he was involved in an attack on Durwiss, Germany, a fortifiedvillage, on November 18, 1944.
During World War II, the 643rd deployed to theEuropean Theater of Operations (“ETO”), attacking coastal defenses, V-1 and V-2rocket sites, airfields, and other targets in preparation for OperationOverland. After D-Day, the 643rdsupported ground forces in Normandy,Caen, and Saint-Lo,and later provided the Third Army with close air support in its advance toward Germany. In December 1944, the 643rdswitched from A-20 Havocs to A-26 Invaders and flew combat missions in the Battleof the Bulge.
