He was Chief Flight Officer for VF-45 on the USS SAN JACINTO, where he saw action in the peak of the South Pacific Theater Campaigns including the Battles of the Marianas, the Philippines, Formosa, South China Sea, Iwo Jima, the first and second air battles for Tokyo and Okinawa Campaigns. In WWII he flew with ex-president H.W. Bush.
He was credited with nine aircraft shot down and a destroyer sunk in the South China Sea. Captain Cain has earned 32 medals and ribbons including the Silver Star, FOUR Distinguished Flying Crosses, 13 Air Medals, and Two Personal Navy Commendation Medals, Legion of Merit. In Korea he flew with VF-172. Post war he was a test pilot.
