Description: This sale is for the Umeco / Zodiak 5\" Transit pictured. It is in excellent little used condition. The optics are crisp and clear. Crosshairs present, all motions move easily. The compass needle is slow and hangs up as it tries to swing. The tag on the inside of the door gives all the specs including a date of 1960. The compass face says Zodiak and there is a Zodiak Decal on the scope that says it is from Pasadena CA, but this transit was made by the Japanese outfit Umeco and simply branded with the Zodiak name. Paperwork in the box indicate this was taken in as trade in 1995 from the Forestry Department where it looks to have spent most of it life sitting unused on a shelf. Part of the US government procurement process no doubt.Your tax dollars at work. This instrument comes from a blueprint and surveying instrument shop that took in lots of optical surveying instruments as partial trade against newer instruments. The fellow who owned the shop would clean and adjust those worthy and then put them on a shelf in the back or in the storage unit so they would not compete with the line of new digital surveying instruments he was trying to sell in the shop.
