I got into Madman pretty recently, when one of my friends recommended the current Madman: Atomic Comics run published by Image. Allred's insanely creative stories involve some pretty intense science fiction concepts, but his unusual characters, especially the titular Madman, are what really drew me in. I did some research and realized that there was an extensive backstory, since Madman was first published in 1990. I pondered purchasing the various trade paperbacks out there, but couldn't bring myself to bite until I saw this collection. It's huge; it's probably the biggest book in my substantial comics collection, but every page is delicious fun. If you're already a fan of Madman, or you're looking to get into Allred's work (Freakazoid! fans take note: Madman is a likely inspiration), this is an excellent buy if you can justify the investment.Read full review
