One of the best, classic, comic strips ever. This big book has the Popeye origin laid out in chronological order with high quality print. There's the color, Sunday strips too. If you love comic art you will love this book.+++++

This Fantagraphics hardcover collection reprints the first appearances of E.C. Segar's Popeye in Thimble Theater. The comic strips were last collected by Fantagraphics about twenty years ago, in a hard-to-find series called The Complete E.C. Segar Popeye. If you already have all the volumes of the previous series, then the only reason to buy this volume would be for the full color reproduction of the Sunday strips, plus the durability of the hardcover format. If your only introduction to Popeye is the cartoons or post-1938 comic strips, this will be an eye opener. You won't see Bluto or so much as a leaf of Spinach in this volume, but you will be introduced to impossible-to-kill Whiffle Hens, casinos, con games, prize fights, piracy, sci-fi adventure (including an electronically- assisted transmigration of souls), and an unlikely hero who was bending steel bars and shrugging off bullets nine years before the first appearance of Superman. You'll also meet Castor Oyl, Olive's greedy, manipulative brother, and the star of the early strips. (Sadly, a star who never made the transition to the animated cartoons.) Think Danny DeVito - in fact, think _Twins_, because the team of Castor and Popeye seems slightly reminiscent of DeVito and Schwarzenegger. The stories are engaging page-turners to this day, balancing slapstick humor and pathos. Well worth the price!Read full review
A truly well done book, produced with a much better quality than the 1980's series. The only sad thing is that the daily strips were reduced in size for this new series.
