Farm Animal Claw or Horn Cutter 19th Century
|

Description:
This is a very rare clipper for use around the farm. I have seen pictures of it's use around farm animals, but I can't remember the specific use. The max. opening of the cutting area is 3/8" diameter. Pushing the handle downward causes the spring presure and the cutter to slide forward toward the front cross beam. In effect it's nearly the same as scissors, but with much more leverage in design. There are two patent dates on the handle in embossed cast iron, marked "NOV 22 81 JAN 23 & JN 5 83" as best as I can read it. There is no maker's name. There are two projections under the cutter, designed to keep the cutting edge a certain distance from the area being cut. The condition of the cutter is very good with about 30% of the old Jappaning still intact, no rust and the cutter is very sharp. A very rarely seen farm tool!
