In the 1920s, small agricultural communities heavily relied on un-personalized "counter checks" kept at local general stores and cash registers. When the Wall Street Stock Market Crash of October 1929 struck, it triggered widespread panic. Small, rural community banks across the Midwest were hit first and hardest by devastating "bank runs" as worried depositors rushed to withdraw their cash. Between 1929 and 1933, roughly 9,000 American banks collapsed and vanished overnight. The Bank of Denver was one of these rural casualities.
