For your consideration is a beautiful vintage Chinese blue-and-white porcelain lidded tea canister (tea caddy). The jar features a classic paneled, multi-scenic design with alternating hand-detailed windows. One side depicts a classic "Shan Shui" mountain-and-river landscape complete with a traditional sailboat (sampan). The alternating panels feature a highly auspicious "Song He Yan Nian" motif showing two cranes standing beneath an ancient pine tree, symbolizing a direct blessing for longevity and peace. The circular lid is accented with diamond cross-hatch borders flanking panels of scholarly scrolls and a gourd basket.Condition & Age Characteristics:
This jar features excellent vintage structural condition with NO post-production cracks, chips, or flea bites on the rims or body. Of particular note to collectors of early-to-mid 20th-century Chinese export porcelain: this piece shows spectacular authentic kiln characteristics. The unglazed clay on the inner lid ring features scattered pinprick iron spots, and a prominent oxidized iron burst/kiln spot is visible on the lower rim of the lid decoration. Furthermore, the unglazed foot rim features an original, stable open firing flaw (kiln split/separation) with smooth, rounded edges that occurred during baking. These manufacturing details point directly to traditional wood- or coal-fired kiln methods using natural clay.
