This blue faience Hippopotamus dates to 1961-1879 BC (the Egyptian Middle Kingdom, 12th Dynasty) and was one of a pair found in a shaft associated with the tomb chapel of the steward Senbi II at Meir, an Upper Egyptian site about thirty miles south of modern Asyut. Though boasting an unassuming appearance, one must remember hippos were a deadly threat to many along the nile, often destroying boats and drowning or crushing people. He likely symbolized protection when crossing waterways then and in the afterlife. A popular piece in the Metropolitan Museum of Arts collection, he was named William in 1931 after the publicationof a British humor magazine describing him as an oricle. (This describes the original artifact).
