Kodak entered the instant photography market in 1976 with its own line of instant cameras and film, competing directly with Polaroid during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Kodak instant photography became especially familiar in the early 1980s, when its cameras and color print film were widely used for family snapshots, parties, holidays, and everyday photography. After a long patent dispute, Polaroid prevailed in court, and Kodak was forced to stop selling its instant cameras and film in 1986. Because Kodak’s instant system had a relatively short production life from 1976 to 1986, surviving photographs are closely associated with that distinctive late-1970s-to-mid-1980s era.
