Vintage set of 12 unused pencils, each stamped "Illinois Central Railroad Form No. 520, No. 2 Code" in gold lettering along the shaft. Round barrel construction (no eraser ferrule), burgundy finish, approximately 7" long x 5/16" diameter.
Manufactured by the Joseph Dixon Crucible Company (Jersey City, NJ) — predecessor to Dixon Ticonderoga — confirmed by the maker's mark and diamond "DXN" trademark on the bottom of the original acrylic snap-lid box.
The 12 pencils are bundled with an original burgundy and cream paper label band reading "High Quality Pencils" on top, with a three-star mark on the short sides.
These were railroad company-issue pencils, used internally by Illinois Central Railroad offices rather than sold at retail — the form number likely corresponds to an internal supply/tracking designation, and "No. 2" refers to standard graphite hardness grade.
Found in an estate collection along with other railroad office ephemera. Pencils are unused with no visible sharpening or wear; box and wrapper show light age wear consistent with vintage storage. Great piece for railroadiana collectors, pencil/office-supply collectors, or Dixon/Illinois Central Railroad history enthusiasts.
