in good vintage condition - please look the picturessize about 8.5 x 13.5 inchesnice to have for the collectionfrom the research:This is a report and petition from New York City’s fire engineers to Governor George Clinton, dated November 27, 1783.
What is it about?
The fire engineers are writing just after the change from British to American government in New York City. They describe the fire department’s condition and ask Clinton to keep them in office.
In plain English, they say:
- Before the recent fire, the engines, equipment, and fire companies were in good condition.
- Fire buckets are now missing, and some equipment needs urgent repairs.
- The city’s safety depends on keeping its firefighting equipment ready.
- They held their appointments under the previous governor, Robertson.
- They ask to continue serving under Clinton and promise the same good conduct.
One especially revealing passage reads:
“Should it please your Excellency to Continue us in this office under your Administration…”
This is both an equipment report and a request to retain their positions under the new government.
The date is historically significant: British troops evacuated New York on November 25, 1783—two days before this letter’s date. Washington and Clinton entered the city as American authority returned.
