1829 Handwritten Letter with Wax Seal – Early 19th Century British Correspondence to New York – Framed Antique Ephemera

Original handwritten letter dated October 5, 1829, beautifully preserved under glass in a vintage frame. The letter is addressed to Mr. Wm. Thomas, Physician & Surgeon, near St. Mark’s Church, New York, N. America, and includes a red wax seal on the reverse.

Written in elegant brown iron-gall ink, the letter spans two full pages and appears to be from Ellen Thomson to her brother William Thomas, offering family news and well-wishes from England. It is an authentic example of early 19th-century transatlantic correspondence—an era when letters carried both personal and historical significance.

This piece comes framed behind glass in a simple wood frame (some wear consistent with age), allowing the address and wax seal to remain visible on one side and the flowing script on the other. The handwriting is crisp and legible, with light toning and expected age spots but no major damage.

  • Date: October 5, 1829

  • Origin: England (likely Somerset or Dorset region, based on address style)

  • Destination: New York, United States

  • Features: Full red wax seal, folded postal format, elegant handwriting

  • Size (approx.): 9 × 14 inches framed

This letter is not only a striking display piece but also a tangible link to early 19th-century communication and emigration between England and the young United States.

From a Santa Fe estate collection known for fine historical and literary pieces. Sold as-is, framed as found.
