AUTHENTIC HISTORIC 1864 CIVIL WAR PHILADELPHIA GAS WORKS UTILITY BILL
Up for sale is an original, authentic mid-19th-century utility document from the later years of the American Civil War. This printed invoice was issued by "The Trustees of the Philadelphia Gas Works" (Register No. 16518) to Mr. Wm. C. Henisey for the family residence located at 1115 Vine Street, Philadelphia.
The bill tracks gas consumption from October 28th to January 29th, 1864, with the bill presented on February 13th. The document provides a fascinating look into early municipal infrastructure and local commerce, complete with consumption math (4,600 cubic feet at $2.25 per thousand feet) and details for a 5% prompt payment discount. It features the prominent signature of the receiving agent at the bottom.
