Florida EvergladesThis is an issue of the illustrated weekly publication, Appleton’s Journal, which was printed over 150 years ago. It is 28 pages long, and measures 8 x 11 inches in size. The paper comes from a bound volume, and has some minor disbinding marks at the spine, but is otherwise in excellent shape. It will be sent in a clear plastic report cover, to help preserve it in the future.The cover page features a fine wood-engraved portrait titled “The Poet of Our Woods,” drawn by W.J. Hennessey, and showing a pensive WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT amid a scenic view. Elsewhere in the issue is a related article about Bryant, with 16 column inches of text, which says of his latest works:“The ancestral and virginal life of the forest — its stillness, its expressive and admirable forms, its dignity, its remoteness — seems to have called forth the homage of our poet as nothing else in Nature. Mr. Bryant may be said to have gone to the woods as other men have gone to cathedrals; and . . . he has let his soul breathe apart from the less austere, less pure worshippers of the Universal Spirit. . . .” Etc. ***************
The issue includes a short article on THE FLORIDA EVERGLADES, which is illustrated with an attractive, full-page engraving titled, “A Florida Scene,” which is a pastoral view filled with wildlife like deer and numerous flamingos and other waterfowl. The accompanying text runs for 60 lines, and begins by saying:“There is a great deal of truthfulness and poetry in the name that has been given to the beautiful openings which occur in the swampy scenery of the peninsula of Florida. Formed in a low and yet not absolutely level country, these magnificent examples of semi-tropical richness strike the beholder with surprise; and it seems a waste of Nature's grandest exhibitions to have these carnivals of splendid vegetation occurring in isolated places, where it is but seldom that they are seen by the appreciative eye of cultivated and intellectual observers. . . .” on this publication: Appleton’s Journal was an illustrated weekly paper published in New York. Its parent company was D. Appleton & Co., Publishers, which at the time was one of America’s leading book publishers. The paper was founded in 1869, and achieved a widespread, but shortlived national popularity during the next six years. It carried some serial fiction, but most of its content was devoted to essays on Americana subjects, plus the arts and sciences. Following several changes in editors, however, it began suffering a decline in circulation.
