Detailed Hype Description

RARE 1882 WELLS, FARGO & CO.’S BANK CHECK – COLUMBIA, CALIFORNIA – SIGNED BY HISTORIC WELLS FARGO AGENT HENRY SEVENING – OLD WEST / GOLD RUSH ERA BANKING

Offered here is an outstanding original 1882 Wells, Fargo & Co.’s Bank check from Columbia, California, issued during one of the most fascinating periods of California and Western American history.

This is Check No. 1495, dated February 20, 1882, and made out in the amount of $150.00, a substantial sum in the early 1880s.

The check was issued from Columbia, California, one of the most famous historic mining towns of the California Gold Rush, and is signed by H. Sevening, identified as Henry Sevening, the longtime Wells Fargo agent at Columbia.

🔥 HISTORIC HENRY SEVENING SIGNATURE

Henry Sevening was not simply a random customer signing a check.

He was a documented Wells Fargo & Co. agent in Columbia, California, operating the company’s express and banking business during the late 19th century.

Sevening was appointed Wells Fargo agent in 1872 and remained associated with the Columbia operation during the period in which this check was issued.

He was also involved in local business affairs and served as president of the Tuolumne County Water Company, giving this piece a direct connection to the business and infrastructure of California’s historic mining region.

That makes this check far more interesting than a common antique bank document.

Wells Fargo

California Gold Rush History

Columbia, California

19th-Century Ephemera

Columbia became one of California’s legendary Gold Rush communities, and original banking documents connected to identifiable Wells Fargo personnel provide a tangible link to the commercial life of the Old West.

This is the kind of piece that looks fantastic framed alongside mining artifacts, Wells Fargo memorabilia, antique currency, Gold Rush material or Western Americana.

Original circulated condition with expected signs of age and banking use.

There are period folds, cancellation marks, handwriting, minor toning, edge wear and a small area of paper loss/ink cancellation near the lower portion.

These characteristics are consistent with a genuine 1882 financial document that was actually used and processed.

Please study all photographs carefully. They show the exact item being offered and form an important part of the description.

Why This One Stands Out

Most antique checks survive as anonymous pieces of banking ephemera.

This example has something considerably better:

A documented signature from Henry Sevening, an actual Wells Fargo agent in historic Columbia, California.

That identifiable connection to Wells Fargo and California mining history gives the document much stronger historical appeal than an ordinary 1880s check.

A fantastic addition to an advanced collection of:

Wells Fargo memorabilia, California Gold Rush material, Western Americana, mining history, historic banking, revenue-stamped paper or antique financial documents.
