Original 1883 satirical “Bill of Fare” menu broadside, printed on cardstock, measuring approx. 5 × 8-1/8 inches. The front shows a seated gentleman studying an oversized “menu” while dogs and a cat dine from punning dishes like “A celebrated cutlet” and “A celebrated tail.” Signed at bottom “W. E. fec. 1883” (Latin fecit, “made by”).
Reverse side is headed “Articles represented on the Bill of Fare but not in the same order” and provides a numbered key to 79 food items and 23 liquors (Mustard, Syllabub, Cantaloupe, Chestnuts, Venison, Claret, Madeira, Gin Sling, Coffee, etc.).
Printed in imitation of handwriting (not a manuscript).
Faint guideline lines visible on reverse, aiding the handwritten effect.
Nice survival on card stock; some edge wear, small corner loss at upper left.
