Original 1886 handwritten business letter on illustrated letterhead from Samuel Dudley, jobber in carriage makers supplies, operating at 18 & 20 Church Street, New London, Connecticut.

The printed letterhead advertises woodwork, hardware, trimmings, paints, and varnishes—materials central to late-19th-century carriage and transportation trades. The letter itself discusses a telephone ordering mistake, including confirmation of goods being “repeated back,” payment already made, and a resulting damage or order dispute. This is a particularly appealing detail, as telephone-based business transactions were still relatively new in the 1880s, making this an early example of remote commercial communication.

Dated June 12, 1886, the letter is signed by Miles O. Peirce, writing for James M. Dudley & Co. The verso is blank. Original fold lines are present, with light age toning and minor handling wear consistent with the period. The printed letterhead remains crisp and well-defined.

A strong piece for collectors of:

19th-century American business correspondence

Carriage, transportation, and pre-automobile trade history

Early telephone commerce

Connecticut or New England ephemera

Authentic period piece related to family, historyor local heritage - well-suited for historical collections, genealogical /genealogy research, or museum acquisition.Vintage or Antique.
