Original August 11, 1902 business letter on illustrated letterhead from GEO. A. YOUNG CO. of Portland, Maine, addressed to A. G. CHAMBERS of Haynesville, Maine regarding a billing dispute and payment terms for shipped goods. The sheet measures approximately 8.5 × 11 inches and features an attractive printed company heading advertising Crockery, Glassware, Earthenware, Rockingham and Yellow Ware, lamps, chimneys, globes, oil cans, burners, etc. The left margin includes an engraved illustration of a lamp chimney/glass shade form, reinforcing the firm’s lamp-goods trade.
The typed letter responds to Chambers’ inquiry about charges for packages and discount terms, stating that the company charges everyone for packages and that prompt payment preserves the discount. The firm notes that if the bill dated October 1st is paid on time the customer will save $3.24, emphasizing that the bill is fair and consistent with what the salesman sold. The letter closes formally: “We cannot send you a fairer bill than this one.”
Documents like this provide insight into early-20th-century wholesale trade practices, particularly the everyday negotiations between rural retailers and regional importers/wholesalers. The letterhead also identifies the business address at 231 & 233 Commercial Street, Portland, Maine, and states that the firm acted as manufacturers’ agents for American factories supplying pottery, glassware, crockery, and lamp goods.
A nice example of New England mercantile correspondence, combining genealogy interest (named sender and recipient) with attractive illustrated trade letterhead.
