General Burnside called for volunteers to cross the river in the pontoon boats themselves — under withering fire — to clear the Confederate snipers from the houses on the Fredericksburg waterfront. Men of the 7th Michigan and 19th Massachusetts stepped forward, rowed across under fire, established a bridgehead, and drove the Mississippians from the town in fierce street fighting. It was one of the most celebrated acts of amphibious courage in the Civil War.
