A dog license tax tag from 1898, Kimberley, South Africa.
Before Kimberley officially became a city in 1912, it\'s local municipal government was known as the Kimberley Borough Council (hence the K.B.C on the license).
The 1898 date is significant. It was the last full year of peace before the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War.Just one year later, on 11 October 1899, war broke out between Britain and the two Boer republics. Kimberley, the famous diamond-mining town on the Cape Colony border, was almost immediately besieged by Boer forces (14 October 1899). The siege lasted 124 days and became one of the most famous episodes of the war.A municipal dog tag from 1898 therefore belongs to the final months of ordinary civilian life in Kimberley before the town was cut off. .A small but tangible relic of the last year before the conflict.

A very rare item.
Condition:
The letters and numbers are all clearly visible. There is a small piece of rusting metal in the hole at the top. Possibly the remains of an iron metal ring that would have attached to the dog collar. The tag itself is brass, so is in good shape. Please see photos.
