1907 LETTER FROM THE DUKE OF FIFE (“FIFE”),TO SIR THOMAS BUXTON MORRISH, K.B.,REGARDING THE MEMORIAL FOR JOHN RENWICK SEAGER, LCC & JP,WITH ORIGINAL ENVELOPE TO LEONARD HOUSE, UPPER TULSE HILL

Description: A fine Edwardian administrative letter dated 19 November 1907, written from 15 Portman Square, London W, and signed “Fife” by Alexander William George Duff, 1st Duke of Fife (1849–1912). The Duke of Fife — husband of Princess Louise, daughter of King Edward VII — frequently signed simply “Fife” in short administrative correspondence of this type.

The letter formally acknowledges the receipt of a memorial submitted by Sir Thomas Buxton Morrish concerning John Renwick Seager, the Hampstead London County Council member and Justice of the Peace. The Duke states that the memorial will be “carefully considered” when he next communicates with the Lord Chancellor regarding the Commission of the Peace for the County of London.

The Lord Chancellor at this date was Lord Loreburn (Robert Threshie Reid, 1st Earl Loreburn), the Liberal Lord Chancellor from 1905–1912.

• Sir Thomas Buxton Morrish (1839–1909) was a prominent London businessman (partner in Howell, James & Co., Regent Street), Chairman of the British and Foreign School Society, Governor of the Borough Polytechnic Institute, and Secretary of the National Liberal Club. He was knighted in 1908 for his contributions to education and public service.

• John Renwick Seager (1858–1936) was a Liberal politician, LCC member for Hampstead, Justice of the Peace, and active Nonconformist educational reformer.

• The Duke of Fife was deeply involved in London charitable and civic patronage, making his involvement in JP memorial correspondence entirely consistent.

Alexander William George Duff, 1st Duke of Fife (Nov 1849 – Jan 1912), styled Viscount Macduff between 1857 and 1879 and known as the Earl Fife between 1879 and 1889, was a Scottish nobleman and peer who married Princess Louise, the third child and eldest daughter of King Edward VII and Queen class="MsoNormal">One of c.2,500+ items once from the collection or dealer stock of Winifred A Myers (Autographs) Ltd, St Martins Lane, London, evidenced by the quantity of Myers pre-printed envelopes and paper folders and the general ‘presentation’ of the items, many having Myers identification notes in pencil.

Winifred Alice Myers (1909 - 1985) served as ABA (Antiquarian Booksellers Assoc) president, 1950-1952. See the ABA website for an extended article on Myers. Myers left her business, in 1985, to Ruth Shepherd, who traded from home until 2004.
