This original antique mounted photograph, measuring approximately 5 x 7.25 inches with an image size of about 3 7/8 x 5.5 inches, depicts RALF FAIRBANKS, identified faintly in period handwriting on the reverse. The portrait was taken at Metropolitan Studio, Morris Bellin, Prop., 77 North Main St., Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
The image shows a young Fairbanks standing formally with a violin and bow, dressed in a dark suit with neatly parted hair. Musical instrument portraits from the late 19th century are highly desirable, particularly when identified. The formal studio backdrop and mount style suggest an 1890s date.
The Fairbanks surname is well established in New England, and this example appears to relate to the same Fairbanks family grouping previously shown (Beverly, Massachusetts connection presumed). Rhode Island and Massachusetts proximity makes the Pawtucket studio location plausible for the family.
