This bustling 1911 view of Main and Third in Dayton shows a city in absolute constant motion. From the packed streetcars to the horse drawn delivery wagons and the prominent W.L. Douglas Shoe Company sign on the right corner this is a fantastic slice of midwestern commercial history. The card was clearly mailed in a hurry and features a heavy 1911 postal cancellation mark that bled directly onto the front sky area. It shows standard corner softening and edge wear from over a century of storage but the busy street level details remain incredibly crisp.

The sender Clara wrote on the back that she only had a few minutes until cartime. She was directly referring to the electric streetcars and interurban rail lines plainly visible on the front of the card. In the early nineteen hundreds Dayton was a massive hub for the midwestern traction railway network with over a dozen lines radiating out from the downtown business district.
