DESCRIPTION

Original First Annual Dinner of Ye Olde Settlers’ Association of Ye West Side, held at the Sherman Square Tavern, Broadway and Seventieth Street, New York City, March 23, 1911.

Measures approximately 6.25 x 9.5 inches. An unusually interesting piece of early 20th-century New York City / Upper West Side history, cord-tied and illustrated throughout.

The front features The Harsen Mansion, identified as erected in 1701 on the present site of the Sherman Square Hotel, Broadway and Seventieth Street, from a pen-and-ink drawing by Thomason.

Inside is the dinner MENU, including Blue Points on the half shell, cream of celery, filet of sole au vin blanc, filet de boeuf Parisienne, broiled squab chicken au cresson, ice cream, cakes, Harsenville cocktail, cigars and cigarettes, and other courses.

Also included is a printed membership roster containing 80 names, among them Warren Cady Crane, William Harris Douglas, Rush Taggart, Edward Morse Cutler, James Griswold Wentz, Charles Edward Hammond, William Edward Webb, Charles Henry Paddock, Lucius Manlius Stanton, William Pike Glenney, Alexander Walker, Simon Ford, Henry Spadone, Rev. David James Burrell, Lewis Mann Silver M.D., Hopper Striker Mott, Francis Sedgwick Bangs, Eugene Gray Foster, George Barker Hodgman, Frederick Gee Hobbs, Alexander M. Powell, Luther Caplin Kellogg, John Caldwell Coleman, Thomas Dimond, Charles Madison Cannon, Rev. Henry Everton Cobb, Prof. John E. Stevenson, George Haven Putnam and others.

The rear features a particularly desirable Harsenville District map, showing the historic neighborhood between Central Park and the North River, including Harsenville, Bloomingdale Road, Broadway, Manhattan Square, Central Park, West 60th through West 81st Streets and numerous old property-owner names. The accompanying text describes the \"olde corners\" called Harsenville and Bloomingdale and directs members to assemble at Sherman Square Tavern.

Also present is a separate small printed invitation/card for the First Annual Dinner, repeating the period-style announcement of the gathering.

Printed by William Allen & Co., N.Y.

Condition shows expected age-related toning, scattered spotting/foxing and staining, including a small darker spot to the front illustration area. Some wear to edges and cord/tassel, with period pencil notation at upper left of front. Please see photos for condition and contents.

A scarce and visually appealing piece of New York City Upper West Side history, combining a 1911 banquet menu, membership roster, Harsen Mansion illustration, historic Harsenville/Bloomingdale map and separate invitation.
