Offered here is a vintage black-and-white photographic print showing an elevated panoramic view of the 1915–1916 Panama–California Exposition in Balboa Park, San Diego, California.

The photograph was taken from the California Tower area and looks east across the Plaza de Panama and along El Prado, the exposition’s principal thoroughfare. The broad plaza occupies the center foreground, while the exhibition buildings, arcades, landscaped walkways, trees, and distant San Diego terrain extend across the image.

This particular view has been identified in institutional collections as an aerial or elevated view of the 1915 Panama–California Exposition. Visible structures include the Science and Education Building near the lower-left portion of the original view, the Home Economy Building farther east along the north side of El Prado, and several other Spanish Colonial Revival exhibition halls surrounding the Plaza de Panama.

The Panama–California Exposition opened on January 1, 1915, and continued through January 1, 1917. It celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal and promoted San Diego as the first American port of call for ships traveling north from the canal. The exposition transformed what was then known as City Park into the cultural landscape now recognized as Balboa Park.

Architect Bertram Goodhue and other participating designers departed from the classical architecture commonly used at American expositions and instead created an elaborate Spanish Colonial Revival environment. The buildings incorporated towers, domes, arcades, courtyards, decorative façades, and architectural influences drawn from Spain, Mexico, and colonial California. The exposition had an enduring influence on Southern California architecture and established Balboa Park as one of San Diego’s defining landmarks.

Despite this wear, the principal view remains clear enough to show the exposition buildings, plaza, central avenue, landscaping, and surrounding park.
