Scout Ski Racing and Scout Skiingn the first decades of the Scout movement, the Scouts were active in a wide variety of sports and at the forefront, right up to the top, in orienteering, mountaineering, skiing and a wide variety of team games, for example.
Over time, top-level sports had developed for the individual sports, which required full commitment in their free time, up to and including professionalism. Many a boy had to choose between top-class sport or scouting. One example is the handball club \'Pfadi Winterthur\', which emerged from a scout team in 1938 and is now a respected and successful National League A club. The name has remained, but probably only a few of the players still have a connection to the scouts. For the active scouts today, it remains a popular sport.

This article shows an excerpt of the Scouts\' skiing activities in earlier times.International ski races in KanderstegIn 1923, the Swiss Scout Association was able to buy land and a chalet in Kandersteg and use it as an international scout home. ln the magazine KIM, the winter camp from 14 December 1923 to 14 January 1924 was advertised. As part of this camp, the
1st International Scout Ski Race was held on 6 January 1924. The winter camp was open to all scouts, participation was possible for any number of days. A report on the races and the results was published in the magazine \'Allzeit Bereit\', 8th year, number 21 February 1924: \"On Saturday, 6th January 1924, the first international Scout ski race took place. Many scouts from several countries took part. The downhill race went from Lake Oeschinen down to Kandersteg. The winner was the Patria section from Berne with 11 min. 55 sec. The ski jumping race took place at the Lötschberg ski jump in several categories. The competition was organised by the Och company in Geneva and Theod Meyer in Berne. Meyer in Bern, as well as the ski club in Kandersteg. The KIM of April 1924 also reported on the results. It can be seen that in most disciplines participants from the Patria Bern and Schwyzerstern Bern sections were in the top ranks. It should be noted that the downhill race was held in three-man patrols.
\"Thus the Kandersteg races are unsteadily the largest Scout winter sports event. It is about elites who start here, whose achievements already mean something, even if they are not exactly the first prizes.
