Original Vintage 1950s Carl Meyer\'s Hop German Restaurant Bar Menu 45 Court Street Buffalo Erie County New York
Carl Meyer opened the German restaurant Carl Meyer\'s Hof at 45 Court Street in downtown Buffalo in 1933, and it was later run by Charles L. Meyer and his sister and co-owner Carol Meyer Ramsey. At its height it employed 40 workers and served 1,200 lunches a day, and a mural covering nearly an entire wall showed nostalgic rural-Germany scenes with plump monks sipping beer. Buffalo News columnist Ray Hill wrote in 1982 that \'the Hof became to Buffalo what the Algonquin Hotel was to New York City — a place where the tables were known by the people who sat at them everyday.\' After the landlord raised the rent 316 percent, patrons signed petitions asking Mayor James D. Griffin to help save the restaurant, but it closed anyway, serving its last meal on January 22, 1982.
