Erection of the world's first offshore sulphur-mining plant--also believed to be the world's largest steel island--is scheduled to begin on June 20, in the Gulf of Mexico, seven miles off the coast of Louisiana. The Y-shaped structure nearly a mile long and rising 55 feet above the water, is the principal part of a $30 million Freeport Sulphur Company project to develop a major new sulphur deposit known as "Grand Isle." Freeport's sulphur's new $30 million offshore sulphur mining plant seven miles off Grand Isle, erection of which is to begin June 20, will look like this from the air. From left to right are the huge power plant; living quarters with 60 bedrooms and 30 baths; heliport and a drilling-producing platform at each end an a giant steel "Y."
