Matching pair of original California black-and-yellow automobile license plates, number HUP 041.
These are genuine California-issued embossed metal plates from the iconic 1963 black-plate series—not modern reproductions. Both plates have matching numbers and retain their original black background with raised yellow lettering.
One plate retains a December month sticker and a California 1984 registration sticker, documenting that the set remained in use through at least December 1984. The other plate retains its original embossed “63” sticker well.
I believe these plates may have come from a Corvette that I previously owned in California, although I no longer have documentation connecting them to that particular vehicle.
Both plates remain solid and display well. They have scratches, oxidation, paint wear, mounting-hole wear and other age-related imperfections from previous use. The original, unrestored appearance gives them excellent vintage character.
Ideal for a California black-plate collection or period-correct display on a Corvette, Mustang, Camaro, Porsche or other 1960s classic automobile.
These plates are sold as collectibles. Their present California DMV status has not been verified. Anyone considering year-of-manufacture registration should confirm eligibility and number availability directly with the California DMV before purchasing.
