This is an original press photo. A soaring population rate coupled with inadequate sewage treatment facilities have seriously harmed St. Tammany Parish water quality, with state health authorities finding stretches of the Tchefuncte, Abita and Bogue Falaya Rivers, Bayou Bonfouca and other streams polluted and unfit for swimming and boating. Other sections of these rivers, mostly in the sparsely populated northern half of the parish, are generally clean and safe for swimmers, the officials said. To help solve the problem, projects costing nearly $25 million are being planned to improve the quality of water in St. Tammany Parish streams.Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.
