History of the 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer:
The 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was one of the last survivors of Jeep’s original SJ full-size SUV design, a platform that dated back to 1962. By this point, the newer compact XJ Wagoneer had already arrived, but strong demand kept the larger Grand Wagoneer alive as Jeep’s premium SUV. Chrysler had just acquired American Motors in 1987 and wisely left the distinctive Grand Wagoneer largely untouched, including its signature faux-wood side panels and carbureted AMC 360 V8. The 1988 model received an upgraded audio system and an optional power sunroof, while its combination of four-wheel drive, V8 power and surprisingly luxurious equipment helped establish the Grand Wagoneer as an early luxury SUV. Production continued through 1991, making these final SJ models the closing chapter of one of the longest-running designs in American automotive history.
