It is a lightweight washer or spacer of some sort. The patch is my favorite of all the space patches. It is not an official NASA patch but it is beautiful and both Techs had one in with their stuff. After a stint in the Marines in WW2 our rocket mechanic went to school to learn about jet engines and other flight mechanics hoping to make a career for himself.
