2 Signed Letters from Admiral Forrest P. Sherman, U. S. Navy, 1950, Waltman For Sale

A pair of typed letters signed by Admiral Forrest P. Sherman (1896–1951), both written in 1950 during his tenure as Chief of Naval Operations and addressed to Washington journalist and political publicist Franklyn Waltman. Each letter is printed on official Chief of Naval Operations letterhead and signed by Sherman above the typed designation “Forrest Sherman, Admiral, U.S. Navy.”

Forrest Percival Sherman (1896–1951) was a distinguished United States naval officer who rose to become Chief of Naval Operations, the Navy’s highest-ranking uniformed position. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Sherman served in a variety of aviation, staff, and command assignments and gained particular distinction during the Second World War, including service as commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS Wasp. He was appointed Chief of Naval Operations in 1949 and played an important role in shaping American naval policy during the early Cold War and the opening stages of the Korean War. Sherman died unexpectedly in 1951 while still in office, bringing to a close a prominent career in twentieth-century American naval history.
