Hellrune is a Marvel Comics superheroine and a founding member of the team New Champions, created by artist Toni Infante and writer Steve Foxe. She first appeared as a non-canon variant cover character in Immortal Thor #3 (October 2023) before being integrated into the main Earth-616 continuity in Spider-Woman #7 (May 2024).
Hellrune is an orphaned human magic user who was kidnapped by Hydra as part of a program to brainwash children into becoming super-soldiers known as The Assembly.
After being rescued by Spider-Woman, she escaped Hydra's control and formed the New Champions alongside Moon Squire, Liberty, and Cadet Marvel. Her powers are derived from a magical spear named Hellreginn, which grants her abilities such as teleportation, flight, lightning generation, and the summoning of enchanted ravens.
Recent storylines in New Champions reveal that Hellrune’s origin is tied to Hela, the goddess of death; she is the intended vessel for Hela’s resurrection on Earth, a fate orchestrated by her long-lost sorceress aunt, Veleda. This dark heritage has positioned Hellrune as a central figure in the team's conflicts against the Cult of Hela and undead threats.
