A 42-star American flag commemorates Washington State's admission in November 1889,but it was never an official U.S. flag because Idaho became the 43rd state on July 3, 1890, just before the July 4th official flag change, skipping the 42-star phase and jumping straight to 43 stars.Produced briefly for about eight months (Nov 1889 - July 1890), these rare, unofficial flags were made by manufacturers anticipating Washington's statehood before Idaho's entry rendered them obsolete.This flag came from a local Central Pennsylvania Dutch family home. The flag does show signs of age/use. The flag retains one metal grommet on the top left above the 42 stars. The bottom left grommet was torn off. Please see my images for more details. The bottom of the flag has 13 of the same holes along the base of the flag; this may have been how it was mounted at some stage. 3 small holes in the area of the stars can be seen clearly in my images. There is a small amount of staining on the flag, along with some discoloration and loose threads, which are consistent with its age.
