As such, and being in its natural state, minor dings may be present. Great pieces for lapidary work or knapping.

This Mahogany Obsidian was gathered from remote volcanic mountains and rolling hills covered by sagebrush in Lake County in Central Oregon from some of the largest and highest quality obsidian deposits in the world.
Obsidian is formed when magma erupted from nearby volcanoes. The molten volcanic material cooled rapidly without having a chance to crystallize; ultimately producing a beautiful, glass-like extrusive rock.
Most obsidian is black, however this location produces several different varieties, including Mahogany. This naturally occurring process is caused by iron inclusions in the magma creating the red, orange and brown coloring.
This obsidian formed approximately 5 to 5.8 million years ago during the late Miocene and Pliocene epochs.
Because obsidian is a lava glass, it is very sharp & may have jagged edges so handle it carefully.MAHOGANY OBSIDIAN GEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES:
Also known as mountain mahogany, it is a natural glass that consists of iron inclusions creating the mahogany colored stripes & swirls present. Obsidian can be found anywhere volcanic eruptions have occurred. It is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that’s created when lava rich in feldspar & quartz is cooled too rapidly for crystals to form. It is not considered to be a true mineral because of its complex composition and lack of crystalline structure.

PROPER CARE:
Obsidian can be cleaned using a soft cloth and soapy water. Soap residue can build up on it, to rinse well and polish after. Take care to store obsidian carefully as it can be easily scratched.
