A TRANSFORMATIVE AMERICAN PRESIDENCY
William McKinley served as president from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. His administration led the United States through a period of economic recovery, industrial expansion and growing international influence at the beginning of the 20th century.
During McKinley’s presidency, the United States prevailed in the Spanish-American War, annexed Hawaii and emerged as an increasingly important global power. He also signed the Gold Standard Act of 1900, formally placing the United States currency system on the gold standard.
McKinley won reelection in 1900 but was assassinated the following year while attending the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. His death elevated Vice President Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency.
