8x10 ecru lined paper with printed letterhead of King & Allen, dealers in general merchandise, Thomaston, Georgia. Dated October 12, 1871, sent to hardware merchants in Macon with a rush delivery (\"by first train\") for some wagon axles and springs, signed by Joseph Allen. Mr Allen must have been in a hurry because the ink wasn\'t entirely dry when he folded this paper to be put on the train for Macon and has left some dried splotches. King & Allen formed a partnership in 1870and set up shop in a downtown store space previously occupied by Mr. W. W. Hartsfield. King & Allen operated as a multi-purpose general store. They heavily advertised a well-selected stock of dry goods, ready-made clothing, groceries, crockery (ceramic dishware), and imported items like new-crop Mackerel.
