An antique Meiji era storehouse hook key we picked up at an antiques sale in Japan.This key would have been inserted into a hole in the door. Next the key would be rotated so the arm was lifting a wood peg in the door that drops into a hole below the door. Once the peg was lifted up the door could be slid open. This is a specific size for a specific door. The length of the shaft and the length of the arm would have been custom made to size. Different lengths would not reach the notch in the door.
From this key we can determine it was made for a door about 3 1/2 inches deep and the notched locking peg would have been about 3 1/4 inches away from the access hole.We have been selling Japanese antiques for 27 years and are shipping from Los AngelesWe have other antique/vintage Japanese items on .
