Antique 1850 Dr Kellinger New York NY Pontil Infallible Liniment Bottle Mint:
$375.00

DR. D. C. KELLINGER / N. Y.

This handsome pale aqua cylindrical medicine stands 6 1/8 inches tall and dates very tightly to about 1850–1855. It has a wonderfully crude, thick applied lip that looks almost as though the hot glass is still dripping into place, an open/iron pontil scar on the base, bold embossing, and exceptional early hand-blown character throughout.

The glass is especially nice: long stretched bubbles rise through the twisting neck, with abundant wavy annealing lines and lively whittle across the body. These are not flaws—they are the fingerprints of the pre-Civil War glassblower and exactly the sort of texture collectors hope to find in an early medicine.

Dr. D. C. Kellinger marketed his celebrated “Infallible Liniment,” also called Kellinger’s Fluid or “Magic Fluid,” from New York City. It was a classic mid-19th-century proprietary remedy: its exact formula is not documented here, but its advertising made enormous claims. It was promoted for rheumatism, coughs and colds, chest complaints, and even hair restoration—rather a lot to ask of one bottle, but the marketing department was clearly feeling ambitious. Contemporary advertising places Kellinger’s principal New York office at 82 Nassau Street by 1850, and later testimonials promoted the fluid as a cure for ailments ranging from rheumatism to long-standing baldness

This bottle belongs to the bustling, rapidly modernizing New York of the early 1850s. The city was expanding northward; railroads, steamships, telegraph lines, mass-circulation newspapers, and national advertising were transforming commerce. In 1853, New York hosted the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations at the Crystal Palace near present-day Bryant Park. Politically, the nation was becoming bitterly divided over slavery after the Compromise of 1850; Franklin Pierce became president in 1853, and the pressures that would lead to the Civil War were already very much in the air.

Patent medicines thrived in that world. Before modern drug regulation, a memorable name, dramatic testimonials, newspaper advertising, and a permanently embossed bottle created a powerful national brand. This is a tangible survivor from that formative moment in American consumer medicine.

Condition: Attic mint. Bright, clean, shiny pale aqua glass with strong embossing. No chips, cracks, scratches, dirt, haze, or residue noted. The base has a sharp, well-defined iron/open pontil scar. Outstanding untouched appearance, with all of the whittle, bubbles, and manufacturing character collectors want.
