Turn-of-the-century Independence Day celebrations in Massachusetts heavily featured inter-town athletic competitions. Towns like Winchester and Arlington regularly competed for custom-engraved presentation silver cups in sports like baseball, track relays, and rowing/boat races (often held on the Upper Mystic Lake at the Winchester Boat Club or local parks).
The Trophy Itself: In the early 1900s, it was highly common for local businesses or municipal organizations to sponsor silver presentation cups or "loving cups" for these annual July 4th events.
