Impressive large clear crystal ball / gazing sphere displayed on an exceptionally ornate cast-metal pedestal stand.
The sphere measures approximately 18" in circumference, which works out mathematically to approximately 5.73" in diameter — just under 5 3/4" across. This is a substantial display-size sphere, considerably larger and more dramatic than the small crystal balls commonly encountered.
The ball is beautifully clear and highly reflective, producing the wonderful inverted and distorted optical images characteristic of a large solid transparent sphere. Depending upon the angle and lighting, it also produces attractive prismatic/rainbow effects around its edges.
What really makes this example stand apart is the ornamental cast-metal base.
The stand has an elaborate Victorian / Rococo Revival-inspired design, with deeply modeled scrolling foliage, curled acanthus-like ornament and bold projecting feet.
