An impressive antique matched pair of Art Nouveau / Symbolist busts, depicting a medieval man and woman.
Woman sculpture is signed René Charles Massé (1855–1913) and feature expressive hooded figures with contrasting emotional character — the woman contemplative and inward, the man alert and outward — a classic Symbolist theme of duality.
Executed in dark patinated bronze (or bronze-finished metal), the busts share identical scale, casting quality, surface finish, and decorative bases, confirming they were conceived and produced as a true companion pair. These are secular allegorical works, inspired by medieval imagery, not religious icons.
The artist’s signature “C. Massé” is cast into the metal and clearly visible (see photos), consistent with known works by René Charles Massé, a recognized French Symbolist sculptor active during the Art Nouveau period.
