Antique Authentic Blacksmith Solid Steel Crown Cap Bottle Opener Circa 1900
This antique crown cap bottle opener was obtained from an estate in Baltimore, Maryland. The estate was of a descendent and relative of William Painter. William Painter invented the crown cap bottle cap for carbonated drinks and the like. The estate tells us that Painter initially secured the services of a local blacksmith in Baltimore to hand forge a number of these bottle openers. He used these bottle openers on sealed bottles while traveling the country pitching his new invention. His crown cap invention caught on and the rest is history. Upon the success of his crown caps, he later commissioned a series of cast iron bottle openers of a new design that he sold commercially. The opener pictured was never commercially sold.
The estate tells us that this is one of the few surviving original openers that he used during his demonstrations.
It is solid, thick, heavy, hand forged, and authentic.
