This is an antique flat-bottom woodworking spokeshave featuring the early Leonard Bailey design, produced prior to or during the early transition to Stanley Rule & Level Co. The tool measures approximately 10 inches in total width with a 2-1/8 inch cutter blade width, featuring straight handles with embossed patent lettering under the wings.
Condition:
Very Good vintage condition. This tool was previously covered in heavy rust and has been carefully restored using Evapo-Rust and treated with boiled linseed oil, which has left it with a smooth, dark, and clean iron patina. The original "Bailey's Patent" and "Aug 31 1858" stamps are still visible under the handle wings as shown in the close-up photos. The cast iron body is solid with no cracks, and the hardware turns smoothly. The cutting iron is present and shows minor oxidation pitting and historical wear consistent with age; it will require basic honing/sharpening before its next workshop use. No manufacturer or Stanley model numbers are stamped on the main body.
