The 4th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Olden in Trenton, NJ.
It was first organized for three months of service on April 27, 1861, and participated in the first Battle of Bull Run as a reserve unit. A different three-year regiment was later mustered in on August 19, 1861, which saw extensive action throughout the war, including at the Peninsula Campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg.
