Antique Caldwell Mfg. Co. Mechanical "Gem" Nutmeg & Spice Grater — Circa 1907
Up for sale is a beautiful piece of early 20th-century Americana: an authentic mechanical hand-crank nutmeg grater manufactured by the Caldwell Manufacturing Company out of Rochester, New York.
Historically known as part of their "Gem" kitchenware lineup, this mechanical tool features a perforated circular tin grating plate rotated by a smooth side crank. The arched arm mechanism arches across the piece and includes a spring-loaded spiked presser foot designed to safely clamp down and stabilize a whole nutmeg seed while you turn the handle.
Markings:
The cast metal arch structural arm is stamped with the original manufacturer lettering: "PAT. AP'D FOR" (Patent Applied For).
Dimensions:
• Total Length: Approximately 4 inches (from the base of the rear handle to the tip of the crank)
• Disc Diameter: Approximately 2.25 inches
Condition Report:
This piece is in exceptional antique condition for being over 115 years old. It remains 100% complete and fully operational, including its original turned wooden handles which still preserve their factory-applied black painted finish. The metal shows an authentic, honest patina with light, age-appropriate oxidation that accentuates its vintage look without compromising the structural integrity of the spring mechanism or crank.
Perfect addition to a collection of early kitchen primitives, mechanical gadgets, or as a distinct conversation piece on a rustic kitchen display shelf. Please review all photos provided against the ruler to verify the exact size, condition, and markings before purchasing.
